Afrobeat legend, Femi Kuti, has told his fans and Nigerians in general that he would not support President Muhammadu Buhari as he seeks a second term in the 2019 general elections.
Kuti said this during the Felabration, a seven-day musical celebration of the lives and times of his father, the great freedom fighter and human rights activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a video shared on Instagram by business mogul, Dele Momodu, Kuti could be seen standing beside Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
He’d later tell the enthusiastic crowd that Osinbajo had solicited his support but he declined because of his father, the late Fela.
Speaking in Pidgin, the patriarch of the Kuti family, said
“I told him I cannot support him because of my father. He is my friend, he respects my views.”
Reacting to the post on Instagram, many Nigerians said they were proud of him for protecting his father’s name, while others suggested the late Fela would be happy in his grave.
While we wait to know who Kuti is backing for the nation’s top job in the coming days…you can hit us up in the comments with your guesses.
